It serves as the bustling urban core of the city, so it’s hard to miss. Its boundaries can be defined by the river to the east, Cuming Street to the north, 10th Street to the west, and Leavenworth Street to the south.

Now that you’re convinced to visit, it’s best to find out what’s in for store. During your stay, you’ll find a lot to see and do in Downtown Omaha, as there’s a wealth of exciting activities and attractions to explore.
Every sight is one to behold, every corner tells a story, and culture thrives from day to night. There’s something for everyone in this lively hub, so get ready to have the time of your life.
1. Explore The Old Market
The Old Market is a vibrant historic district that captures the essence of Omaha’s past while offering all the modern-day merriments. It dates back to the late 19th century when it served as the city’s chief wholesale and retail center.
(a) Charismatic Architecture
Most of the buildings in the Old Market retain their historic charm with unique architectural details. I truly admire the ancient facade, as it virtually transports you to a different time.
If you have an eye for antiquities, you shall be keen on inspecting every nook and corner. Every time I walk by these beautifully crafted buildings, I hear a timeworn symphony that makes me smile.
(b) Cobblestone Streets and Vintage Lamps
The cobblestone streets lend a nostalgic and timeless ambiance to the marketplace. It’s a welcome change from the concrete roads of the city. They remind me of charming alleyways in the old parts of Europe, which is oddly relaxing.
I should also mention the vintage street lamps, which create a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls and some epic Instagram moments! When it rains, it almost feels like you’re in London.
(c) An Abundance of Arts and Entertainment
The Old Market is a sacred haven for artists, with numerous art galleries and studios overflowing with local talent. If you’re going through a creativity block and looking for inspiration, you’ll surely find some here.
This area is never short of options for entertainment, especially after sunset. If you’re lucky, you might catch a live music performance or stand-up comedy show. I personally prefer the latter because we rarely get a chance to laugh out loud, right?
(d) Food and Events
The local community regularly hosts public events, such as art walks and concerts. If you visit without something specific in mind, this place will give you enough options to choose from.
Whether you’re in the mood for street food or fine dining, this place has it all. If you’re looking for quality pub food in the district, “M’Pubs” is the place to be; they serve the best kind of sandwiches, salads, soups, and crabcakes!
If you want to savor upscale French food, go to “Le Bouillon” and order all the classics. Craving seafood? No Problem! Make your way to “Plank Seafood Provisions” and enjoy the best of the ocean on their lovely outdoor patio.
(e) Shopping
Finally, shopping! It’s something that’s important to many of us. The Old Market district has the trendiest clothing boutiques featuring contemporary and ethnic fashion. The last time I visited this place, I bought the prettiest wrap bracelets and scarves at a place called “Moksha”.
You definitely need to buy yourself at least one nice outfit from the native vendors around here. It’s a great way to support small businesses and it helps blend in with the locals.
I could spend hours at the antique stores and gift shops in this marketplace. They brim with one-of-a-kind trinkets and stunning home décor items that you won’t find anywhere else.
2. Get The Best out of Visiting Park East
Park East is a peaceful sanctuary amidst the buzzing city, thus if you wish to step away from the hubbub and immerse yourself in the calming embrace of nature, just be here.
(a) Spectacular Views
The highlight of East Park is its magnificent landscaping; the natural greenery on all sides is just what you need to ease your mind of all burdens.
This place also offers a unique vantage point to admire the beauty and grandeur of Omaha’s urban landscape. You can see the city skyline, the Missouri River, and the iconic Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge from here.
(b) Fun and Leisure
If you’re visiting with family, there’s no better place to have a picnic and engage in outdoor activities. The lush green open space is ideal for a game of Frisbee or Tag.
My favorite thing to do at Park East is to engage in leisurely strolls along its scenic paths and sit by the water fountains.
Park East is a popular spot for community gatherings and events all year. From outdoor concerts and art exhibitions to cultural festivals and food carnivals, there’s always something happening that provides an excuse to mingle and have fun.
3. Visit The Art Center of North Downtown
If you’re a fan of arts and crafts, you must reserve one day to spend at the Hot Shops Art Center of North Downtown. It’s an exuberant and creative space that unites a diverse community of artists from different disciplines.
(a) Learn and Create
The Art Center allows you to observe skilled artists at work and learn about various creative processes related to painting, ceramic-making, sculpting, glassblowing, and more.
You can even opt to attend workshops or take classes to participate in artmaking. I tried my hand at glassmaking the one time I visited the center, and it was indeed a phenomenal experience. I cannot wait to return someday soon and do it again!

Traveling with kids can be quite a challenge since they have a lot more energy than us adults, and it’s easy to run out of ways to keep them entertained.
Luckily, the Riverfront in Downtown Omaha is home to a wide range of activities and attractions that will keep the munchkins occupied for a long time.

The Riverfront area has several parks, which means plenty of space for kids to run and play outdoors. The scenic bike paths and pedestrian-friendly trails are perfect for family bike rides and hikes.
Kids can bring their bicycles, scooters, or rollerblades to put their verve to good use. In my opinion, outdoor activities are a true necessity in this technological era. Switch off your phones to have some uninterrupted fun and physical exercise.

Connecting Nebraska and Iowa, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is yet another exciting attraction. You may indulge in the stunning panoramic views of the city while crossing the bridge, while the kids race and play games like “I Spy”.
Spot landmarks along the way and involve your kids to improve their general knowledge. On a side note, safety comes first, so ensure that children keep their distance from the edge.

The Omaha Children’s Museum is located right beside the Riverfront, and it would be an understatement to call it a dreamland for kids. It has a giant Ferris Wheel, a Carousel, and lots of joy rides that leave the children starry-eyed.

Beyond the exhibits, the museum’s interior itself is a remarkable sight. The Art Deco architecture and intricate details of the former train station create a visually stunning environment that adds to the overall experience.

This shop has an impressive collection of quirky and unusual stuff that makes great gifts on special occasions. It is a small local business, and the friendly owners are often willing to give generous discounts.
(b) What’s so special about this place?
The locals particularly rave about their holiday-themed items, such as Halloween decorations and Christmas ornaments. It is also known to be the best place to buy hot sauce; I can totally vouch for that because I have seen its extensive collection.
Ashley’s Collectibles is the kind of shop where you tend to find that little something you didn’t know you needed, and that’s what makes it so special.

Downtown Omaha has an amazing coffee and brewery scene, which caters to all sorts of tastes and preferences. Do take out time to check out the local beer varieties and grab a latte or two while you’re there. You might face difficulty choosing from the many promising options, so I’ll let you know some of the best ones out there.

(i) Howlin’ Hounds Coffee: This cozy coffee shop is probably the best one around downtown because it knows quality brewing. It has a laidback atmosphere, similar to boutique coffee shops around Chicago. The owner has a great personality and attitude, and the place is dog-friendly as well.
(ii) Urban Abbey: This is a bookstore and coffee bar – a classic combination. It’s a peaceful place where you can browse books, read one, and sip a nicely done latte. This café welcomes all kinds of pets, so you can totally stop by with your cat.
(iii) Rally Coffee Co: This bright and elegant coffee shop in North Downtown serves great coffee and breakfast. The place is always buzzing with customers enjoying their morning caffeine fix with some delicious sandwiches. Their avocado toast and blueberry toast are too delicious!

(i) Brickway Brewery & Distillery: I had to talk about this one, as it is the local favorite. The place offers a wide range of craft beers brewed on-site, as well as spirits distilled in-house. Spring in Downtown Omaha offers mild temperatures and blossoming landscapes. It is an ideal time to visit if you adore nature and want to explore outdoor attractions like parks, gardens, and the riverfront.
However, keep in mind that spring can also bring occasional rainfall. I don’t mind the rain, but it doesn’t hurt to carry a pocket umbrella.
2. Summer (June to August)
Despite being hot and humid, summer is also a good time to visit Downtown Omaha. This is because numerous outdoor events and festivals are held in the warm weather; this includes concerts, art fairs, and dining in the open.
3. Fall (September to November)
Fall bids cooler temperatures and beautiful foliage, making it the perfect season to explore the outdoors. The weather is generally pleasant, and you can be part of events like harvest festivals, Oktoberfest celebrations, and seasonal markets.
